Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. There is no established Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for Hyaluronic acid as whilst it may be useful for its therapeutic benefits it is not considered an essential nutrient to health. Common dosage range from 20mg-200mg.
Hyaluronic Acid has been shown to assist in helping the skin to retain moisture and prevent dehydration. It may help to smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to its plumping action. Hyaluronic acid also works by acting as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues and has also been shown to be effective in wound healing.
Anti-aging-A double-blinded, placebo-controlled study involving Japanese male and female subjects aged 22–59 years showed those who took Hyaluronic acid at a dose of 120mg per day had significantly diminished wrinkles compared with the placebo group after 8 weeks. In the same study, significant improvements in skin lustre and suppleness were also reported after 12 weeks. The study concluded oral Hyaluronic acid inhibits wrinkles and improves skin condition (Oe et al, 2018).
Wound Healing- a systematic review of human and animal models and in vitro studies between 2010-2014 into the role of hyaluronic acid in wound healing showed it to be safe and effective in skin repair (Neuman et al, 2015).
Anti-ageing-Hyaluronic acid has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve the condition of the skin. It has also been shown to help the skin to retain moisture and given that dehydration contributes to the appearance of ageing skin taking a supplement may, therefore, be useful for those looking to improve the appearance and condition of their skin and reduce the overall appearance of ageing.
Joint Health- For those experiencing joint problems, a supplement containing Hyaluronic acid may be useful in helping to relieve pain and discomfort due to its role in cushioning and lubrication of the joints. It may also contribute to the maintenance of joints to the reduction of wear and tear as a result of acting as a cushion to the joints.
Wound Healing- Hyaluronic acid has been shown to effective in wound healing and therefore may be useful as a supplement for those who may have had surgery or for those looking to encourage healing of minor injuries.
Hyaluronic acid is considered to be safe when taken in appropriate amounts. There is no established Tolerable Upper Intake Level for Hyaluronic acid.
