Remedies and Relief for Hay Fever

We know that this time of year is supposed to all about getting outside and enjoying the summer weather. However, if you’re one of the one in four people estimated to suffer from hay fever it might not be quite as enjoyable as others may think. With that in mind we’ve compiled a few tips and tricks that may help alleviate some of your symptoms.

Local Honey

Having a teaspoon of locally made honey, is said to be a simple and delicious way to alleviate hay fever. Whether it works or not is debatable, but if you like honey, it’s worth a try.

Dry Indoors

Although it’s tempting to make the most of the sunny weather and dry your washing outside, it’s bound to pick up pollen. Drying your clothes and bedding inside will prevent them from collecting pollen and mean you’ll hopefully have less itchy eyes.

Vaseline on the Nose

Dabbing some Vaseline around your nostrils can help trap the pollen before it enters your nose. It might be worth dabbing some around your nose throughout the day if you’re outside for a while. Make sure you wash your hands before applying.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile contains antihistamines and antioxidants, which means it may help to relieve the symptoms of hay fever. Also, the warmth and steam from the tea might help clear your nose. If you’re not a fan of chamomile, you could also try liquorice or nettle tea instead.

Sunglasses

Much like the Vaseline trick above, wearing sunglasses can prevent the pollen entering your eyes. If you own a pair of wraparound sunglasses, that’s even better, but any pair of sunglasses will be a start.

Shower

We’re not saying you smell, but showering helps to wash the pollen our of our hair and off our body. Showering in the evening is a better option as you’ll wash all the pollen off from the day before you go to bed. We’d also suggest washing your clothes more often, to make sure you remove the pollen regularly.

Clean

Ensuring your surfaces are dusted and your floors are vacuumed regularly will keep the pollen out of your house. It’s an easy thing to forget but having pollen floating around your house means your body will never have a break.
