We all know that vitamins are good for us. Keeping us strong, healthy and fit, our daily vitamins are an important part of our health and wellbeing.
Yet, it can be confusing to understand how important vitamins are. To make things clearer, we’ve put together this guide to understanding exactly what are vitamins and why we need them to keep us at our best.
What are vitamins?
Vitamins are essential organic compounds that help keep your body running smoothly. There are different kinds of vitamins, A, B, C, D, E, and K, all of which play different roles inside our bodies.
For example, Vitamin A helps produce white blood cells which fight off infections and stop us from being ill.
The B vitamins have a lot of different types, all of which help our bodies us break down and get the nutrients and energy from the food we eat. The B Vitamins also help us use the energy from food, keeping us moving throughout our days.
Vitamin C helps us fight infections and make a tissue called collagen, which forms bones, teeth and helps us heal wounds. Vitamin D is also important for our bone health, as it helps us absorb the calcium we need to keep our teeth and bones strong.
Vitamin E is used for making red blood cells and helping us get rid of anything that could damage our cells, while finally, Vitamin K helps blood to clot.
Overall, vitamins help us to build muscle and bone, heal wounds, fight off sickness and capture and use energy to keep us moving.
What happens if we don’t have enough Vitamins?
Vitamins are important for our health, but they’re something that our body can’t make by itself. Instead, they come from the foods that we eat. If we don’t have enough vitamins in our diet, this can lead to a range of problems such as feeling tired, sick, weak or having shortness of breath.
A lack of vitamins can cause a range of illnesses including Scurvy, which is caused by a lack of vitamin C and results in spotty skin, losing teeth, and bleeding and swollen gums, and Rickets, a disease which causes the softening of bone tissue, which comes from Vitamin D deficiency.
If we don’t have enough vitamins in our diet, our bodies will struggle to stay healthy and work as normal.
If you think you might not be getting enough of your daily vitamins in your diet, it’s a great idea to take a vitamin supplements to keep your body in its best condition.
