Essential Vitamins and Minerals Your Body Needs

As you can imagine, creating a blog post about essential vitamins and minerals is a tricky subject. Every vitamin and mineral will play a role of some sort in our bodies. The trouble is a blog post about every vitamin and mineral would have been a bit long and, well, a bit boring. So, what we’ve done is compiled a list of the most spoken about vitamins and minerals. So, here you have our list of essential vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin C

A true powerhouse when it comes to vitamins. Vitamin C is crucial for more than 300 metabolic functions. Some functions include wound healing, maintaining healthy skins, bones, cartilage and blood vessels, protecting cells, and ensuring they stay healthy. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C also aids in immune system support.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps absorb calcium and regulate the amount of phosphate in our bodies. The vitamin is also needed to help our bones, muscles, and teeth stay healthy. Spending about 15 minutes in the sunlight should allow you to get your daily dose. Yet, many struggle to get that due to work and weather conditions. It’s also hard to find in food, which is why vitamin D supplements are popular.

Vitamin B12

All B vitamins are essential; they’re like a sports team working in harmony to break down nutrients and create an energy supply for the body. Still, in the pursuit of being concise, we picked vitamin B12 as the primary choice for an essential B vitamin. B12 helps produce DNA, the building block of cells, and maintains the health of the nerve and blood cells in the body.

Calcium

Commonly found in dairy products, which is why your parents wanted you to get your milk. Calcium is the mineral required to maintain strong bones and teeth and regulate muscle contractions. It’s also found in nuts and leafy vegetables, FYI.

Iron

Iron is a fundamental mineral in the production of red blood cells. They’re the blood cells that carry oxygen around your body. A lack of iron can lead to anaemia, an iron deficiency. Vegans and vegetarians tend to be at a higher risk of lacking sufficient iron levels as it is commonly found in meat.

Zinc

Often lower in older people or those under stress, Zinc helps to create new cells and enzymes and contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. The mineral also supports the processing of carbohydrates, fats and protein.

These are just a selection of essential vitamins that we have chosen. Many others help the body function properly. For more information about various vitamins and minerals, why not look at some of our other blog posts.
